Free drop-in creative workshops celebrating Derbyshire’s innovators - past and present - on board Derbyshire’s travelling makerspace.

Join us on board The Makory at Ashbourne's Market Place for hands-on making celebrating Derbyshire’s innovators – past and present – whose curiosity, creativity and courage have shaped how we live and make today.

The Makory will host artist-led workshops, shaped by local histories, materials and landscapes, combining both heritage craft and playful, contemporary making. Visitors are invited to step on board and take part.

What to expect in Ashbourne

Artist Sophie Gresswell invites you to take part in Enlightenment – Views Through a Hologram, a playful and thought-provoking workshop exploring light, illusion and technology.

Using drawing, collage and simple materials, you’ll design your own image reflecting ideas about modern technology and how it shapes our lives. You’ll then transform your artwork into a working hologram using a handmade prism – watching your creation appear to float and come to life through light and reflection.

Inspired by figures such as Joseph Wright of Derby and John Whitehurst, the workshop connects historic innovation with today’s technologies – inviting you to consider what we create, why we create it, and what it means.

You will also have the opportunity to explore a touring exhibition, connecting local heritage, making and innovation.

Each Makory stop offers a unique experience, shaped by its surroundings and the people who join in.

From 10 am, the town’s new Market Place will come alive and full details of this year’s Ashbourne Festival Programme events will be announced.

The Makory Bus joins the programme launch, while the town’s vibrant Makers Market will provide additional attractions

Delivered by Local, in partnership Derby Museum and hosted by Ashbourne Arts and Derbyshire Dales District Council.
