Walk

Women Who Make invites you to a guided circular walk across Birchen Edge and Gardom’s Edge, combining nature connection and sketching.

Join Steph Walsh for a Wander Walk across Birchen Edge and Gardom’s Edge, combining nature connection, landscape and sketching.

A fabulous 3.2mile walk along the edge of two gritstone escarpments in search of a neolithic carving. This walk offers exceptional views across the peak district landscape, as well as an ancient birch wood and open moorland. ‘Nelson’s Monument’ on Birchen Edge, is a gritstone pillar carved in honour of Lord Nelson in 1810, located adjacent to ‘Nelson’s 3 Ships’ large rocky outcrops with the names of three of Nelson’s ships carved into them.

The walk begins with a steep ascent to the top of Birchen Edge, which offers fabulous views of the peak district landscape, along the edge for about ½ mile until we reach Nelson’s Monument, then we follow the path down to cross the moorland and through the ancient birch wood onto Gardom’s Edge. We will sketch some neolithic carvings in the bracken field before heading back down past an ancient oak wood.

Duration: 2.5 – 3.5 hours
Parking: Robin Hood Pub Baslow – paying car adjacent to the pub (FOC for RSPB
members)

Difficulty Level: Easy/Moderate. Slight scramble up to the top of Birchen edge, stiles and
uneven ground, can be very boggy.

NB. Please wear suitable clothing and footwear for the weather conditions.
