Patchwork of Possibilities

Community-made patchwork
If you missed seeing this large-scale Patchwork of Possibilities in Swadlincote during the Derbyshire Makes Festival in April, you can now view it on our Digital Loom, as part of our Dare to Dream project.
The banner contains 95 mini fabric banners, each the size of a historic Gob Brick, in this stunning community quilt which celebrates creativity, unity, and local heritage.
Inspired by Joseph Wilkes' revolutionary brick design, the quilt honours how craftsmanship has helped build the community, one patch (or brick!) at a time.
Created by schools, groups, and individuals across South Derbyshire, each patch shares a personal hope or dream for the future - stitched together by Church Gresley Sewing Group into a vibrant example of crafting.
Take a moment to appreciate the voices of the local communities of South Derbyshire.
Did you know?
In response to the 1784 Brick Tax, Joseph Wilkes of Overseal, Derbyshire, invented Gob Bricks-larger than standard bricks-to reduce costs and speed up construction. This clever design helped builders use fewer bricks and pay less tax, making them popular during the Industrial Revolution.
This project was led by People Express.
