Weaving Heritage, Stories and Community

Lady of the Loom is a new walkabout puppet created by Babbling Vagabonds as part of Derbyshire Makes. Inspired by Derbyshire’s rich textile heritage, she is a wandering maker, mender and collector of stories who carries a world of memories on her back.

Developed with support from the Derbyshire Makes Small Grant Scheme, the project has brought together makers and young people to create a large-scale puppet that was inspired by cloth, craft and the people who have shaped Derbyshire through making. Young participants have worked alongside professional artists to help design elements of the character, contribute ideas that have become woven into the Lady of the Loom’s world.

Lady of the Loom appears in public spaces, pausing to rest, listen and dream. These small moments invite audiences to slow down, notice their surroundings and celebrate the creativity, skills and traditions that connect communities across Derbyshire.

The project culminated in Glossop, where the Lady of the Loom led a community celebration parade which featured handcrafted flags, seasonal creatures and contributions made by local people. Through storytelling, making and shared imagination, the project celebrates the idea that everyone has a part to play in the fabric of their community.

Lady of the Loom is a celebration of Derbyshire’s makers past and present, bringing together heritage, creativity and community in one gentle magical character.
