Follow the thread from historic textile making to the cloth we wear today.
Meet contemporary weavers Ruth Faris and Bea Uprichard of Fishbone & Sycamore in The Weaving Shed, where they'll be demonstrating Jacquard weaving and sharing the fascinating processes behind their craft.
See weaving in action, discover how the Jacquard mechanism works and find out about the specialist knowledge, time and craftsmanship involved in creating woven silk.
Ruth and Bea are passionate about keeping traditional textile skills alive – but their work also asks us to think about our own relationship with the things we wear.
When we understand how cloth is made, the skills involved and the people behind it, does it become something we value differently?
Stop for a demonstration, ask a question or simply watch the threads come together.
About Fishbone & Sycamore
Ruth Faris and Bea Uprichard are weavers, designers and textile makers based in Manchester, with a shared passion for heritage craft and conscious consumption.
Both work as restorers and weavers at Paradise Mill in Macclesfield, home to a unique collection of Victorian Jacquard handlooms.
After weaving the first new design at Paradise Mill in 30 years, they established Fishbone & Sycamore, weaving silk while working to preserve traditional skills and breathe new life into the craft.
You can also hear Ruth and Bea speak at Woven to Last, their festival talk at 12pm.
