Bringing our South Derbyshire heritage to life
Like threads woven together, South Derbyshire’s past, present and future are closely connected. From mining and pottery to textiles and flax-growing, these skills, industries and stories continue to influence how people live, make and create today. This free, fun-filled day of creativity and community in the heart of Swadlincote is inspired by this history – inviting people of all ages to get stuck in and explore making in all its wonderful, magical forms. Meet local artists including our Forest Makers, whose nature-friendly craft practices are growing in the heart of the National Forest. Be inspired at new exhibitions and enjoy exciting performances across some of Swadlincote’s much-loved town centre venues.
Why not roll up your sleeves at our SUNBURST workshops at Magic Attic? Here, you’ll learn about Bretby Art Pottery and have a rare chance to make your own Sunburst logo from clay, using a 3D scanned replica of the original 1890s logo, which is the only one in existence in the world! Or visit the Lamplight project in the Glaze room of Sharpe’s Museum to meet John, who shares the story of his local mining community. Then head out with your phone to the High Street and listen to new oral histories captured by South Derbyshire Mining Preservation Group. Derbyshire Makes Swadlincote is a chance to reconnect with local stories, learn new skills and celebrate the power of making together. Whether you’re curious, creative, or just looking for a great day out, everyone is welcome.
