Bolsover
Discover Bolsover
This historic market town on the edge of the Peak District is home to the imposing Bolsover Castle, a swathe of independent shops, and restaurants supplied with local produce. The ideal jumping off point for countryside walks, you can easily reach the wetland nature reserve of Carr Vale on foot for a spot of birdwatching – or venture further afield to Hardwick Hall, Creswell Crags (home to Britain’s only Ice Age cave art) or Sutton Scarsdale Hall.
In Bolsover itself, discover Old Bolsover Yard, a former butcher’s yard transformed into a complex of independent shops and craft workshops. Bolsover Castle dominates the skyline above the town: built on the site of a medieval fortress, this 17th century ‘Little Castle’ boasts rooms with wooden panelling, marble fireplaces and tapestries. Pace the wall walk, with its panoramic views, watch dressage displays in the historic riding school or relax in the castle’s café.
